Maarte / mär·te / (tagalog) — someone with a discerning eye.
A word often used to describe someone particular about details, expressive in taste, and intentional about beauty. Just as the word itself celebrates discernment and expression, Maarte translates intention into floral form. Each arrangement is guided by line, movement, and seasonality, allowing the natural character of every stem to shape the composition.
Who is Maarte?
Hi, my name is Jen.
I’m a Toronto-based floral artist and multidisciplinary creative with roots between the Philippines and Riyadh. My work lives at the intersection of floral design, art, and cultural storytelling.
I’m currently a student of Sogetsu Ikebana, a contemporary school of Japanese floral art that explores line, movement, and the relationship between material and space. That practice has deeply shaped how I approach flowers. Rather than focusing on abundance, my work is guided by intention. Every stem is placed with care, allowing negative space, structure, and natural movement to become part of the composition.
Flowers became a return for me. A return to stillness, to lineage, and to memory. Growing up, I was surrounded by plants and gardens through my grandmother, who saw beauty in everyday things. That influence continues to shape how I work today.
Maarte, is a floral studio rooted in creativity, gathering, and shared experience. Through arrangements, installations, and workshops, my work invites people to slow down, notice the quiet details of nature, and reconnect with the rhythm of the seasons.
